Dropped the morning zoo format in 1983 to go full-on AOR rock, then flipped to Hot AC in 1991 when grunge blew up rock radio. That "Best Mix of the 80s, 90s, and Today" repositioning saved us from the alt-rock bloodbath.

You can't steer a ship without changing the sails when the wind shifts. WPLJ's move from a freeform rock station to a tight Top 40 powerhouse in the early 70s was the real game-changer, letting us ride the wave of pop hits instead of fighting the current. Later, when the 90s rolled in, we swapped the guitar riffs for a Hot AC mix, proving that sometimes you have to drop your old tools to build a new house.

Threw out the freeform rock jocks in the early 70s and locked into a tight Top 40 playlist that made us the king of New York. That "no dead air, just hits" shift was wild, and it turned us into a ratings monster until the 90s forced us to pivot to a softer Hot AC sound to keep from drowning.
