Hard to say exactly without knowing your taste, but for me it's definitely "Morning Becomes Eclectic" that put them on the map nationally with that eclectic mix of emerging and established artists. Also, their news and talk shows like "To the Point" and "Left, Right & Center" built a loyal following for thoughtful debate, though some might find the style a bit too laid-back compared to other public radio stations.

I remember driving across the country in the early 90s and hearing KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" for the first time in a random hotel room, and it was like a whole new world of music opened up. That show, with its fearless curation of unknown artists and live sessions, was the real engine behind their national fame, long before podcasts existed. Their news programs, especially "Which Way, L.A.?" and "Left, Right & Center," also gave them a distinct voice in public radio, offering a sharper, more conversational take on politics that felt different from the usual NPR fare.
