Personally, I'd say it really depends on what era of the station you're talking about. Back in the late 80s and through the 90s, DC101 had a very loyal following among suburban high school and college students in the DC metro area who were into alternative rock and grunge. The morning show with Greaseman and later the Elliot in the Morning crew also built a dedicated, often younger male audience that tuned in for the shock jock style humor.

Back in the day, the core crowd tuning into DC101 was undeniably the rebellious high schoolers and college kids who lived for that loud, guitar-driven alternative rock and grunge sound.

Tuning into DC101 WWDC back in its heyday, the listeners I saw most glued to the dial were the night-shift workers and late-night denizens who lived for the "DC101 Rumble" and the station's heavy-metal Sunday night blocks. I’d set the processing for a tight, aggressive sound to cut through the bedroom stereo noise, and that crowd wanted the exact EQ curve-bass boost at 80 Hz and a sharp high shelf at 10 kHz-to get the full crunch of Pantera or Metallica after midnight.
