Looking at the market data from the late 80s through the 2000s, DC101 went head-to-head with WHFS and WJFK in a very aggressive three-way battle for the region's rock audience. While HFS leaned alternative and WJFK shifted to talk, WWDC held its own by maintaining a tighter, more mainstream active rock playlist, often winning the 25-54 male demo in key books. My conclusion is that the competition was fierce and constant-it forced all three stations to tweak their formats repeatedly, but DC101 survived because it carved out a slightly harder-edged, less niche identity that didn't alienate casual listeners.
